WOODEN BOWLS Workshop is a variation of our established two day Bowl Carving Course but starting with the making of a low bench from local hardwoods.
- 2023 dates to be confirmed (2 days)
- Cost: £240
- Venue: The Northumberland Centre for Greenwood Craft at Kirkley Hall, Northumberland
Designed to grip bowl blanks securely whilst being carved, a low bench will allow you to continue the craft of bowl carving when you get home.
This is the traditional way Swedish woodworkers use to hold bowl blanks and in our view still the best.
Day 1: making a sturdy low bench with an oak board and ash legs. A pre-milled 2" thick oak board about 5 - 6' long will be measured, marked and drilled out for four legs. Then using straight clean winter cut locally sourced ash we will split, axe and drawknife legs to accurately fit the drilled mortices. Several rows of holes will then be drilled to allow the use of wooden dogs and wedges, which we will also make, to lock the bowl blank to the bench.
This is your low bench to take away at the end of the course.
Day 2 you will use your newly-crafted low bench to make a wooden bowl from locally sourced freshly felled hardwood.
Using specialist hand tools such as carving axes, doubly curved adzes, gouges and spokeshaves from eminent makers such as Hans Karlsson, Gransfors Bruks, Svante Djarv and Ashley Iles.
