Terms and Conditions

Welcome to Woodsmith, the online store owned and operated by The Woodsmith’s Store Ltd. We kindly ask you to carefully read the following terms and conditions as they govern your use of our site. By accessing and placing an order on our site, you agree to abide by these terms and conditions.

Please note that these terms and conditions apply solely to the use of The Woodsmith’s Store Ltd website. If you do not agree to these terms and conditions, please refrain from using our website.

Placing Orders

Orders can be conveniently and securely placed online via our website. Please do not email us your card details as we cannot ensure the security of your information when provided this way. All orders are subject to availability.

Payment Method

We accept most major credit and debit cards including Visa and MasterCard. We also offer the option of paying via PayPal. Please note that transactions made using PayPal will be subject to their terms and conditions. To learn more about PayPal’s terms and conditions, please visit their website.

If you prefer to pay by cheque or bank transfer please contact us by phone or email to arrange. Please note that we may wait for a cheque to clear before dispatching goods. The Woodsmith’s Store Ltd cannot take responsibility for incorrect or incomplete details provided on our website. Orders submitted without complete information cannot be processed.

Please note that card fraud is illegal and perpetrators will be prosecuted.

Age Verification

Online retailers selling bladed articles are required to have age verification checks in place to ensure that they do not sell such items to under-18s. As such a retailer, Woodsmith is legally required by UK law to ensure the following:

  • That the person purchasing the bladed article is over the age of 18

  • That any package containing a bladed article is appropriately labeled and safely packaged

  • That the person receiving the delivery of the bladed article is over the age of 18 and that the package containing such items is not delivered to an unattended locker

We utilise age verification software by AgeChecked to verify the age of our customers buying bladed articles.  They verify against a number of data sources to deliver a high level of assurance that the customer is who they say they are and they are over the required legal age for any age-restricted goods or services. All customers' identity is kept anonymous via AgeChecked’s tokenised solution and no personal data is stored on AgeChecked’s system; as soon as the age or identity of the customer is confirmed, AgeChecked wipes the information. All data processed by The Woodsmith Store Ltd is held in accordance with GDPR and solely for the purposes outlined above.

This software conducts age verification checks at the point of purchase to increase efficiency and improve the customer experience. However, in some instances (usually due to small discrepancies in address input) we don’t always get a verified match. Therefore, if you make a purchase from our online store that includes a bladed article and we aren’t able to verify your age using AgeChecked, we may still manually contact you via email to request proof of age.

Please note that regardless of the shipping expediency type chosen, we will be unable to ship your package until we receive the necessary age verification. Your data will be handled in strict  accordance with our Privacy Policy, and it will be used solely for the purpose of verifying your age.

The legislation does not provide a definition for every tool that we stock. Therefore, after thoroughly examining the legislation, relevant definitions, statutory guidance, and supporting documentation, we have implemented an 'Above 18' categorisation system across all of our products to ensure compliance. This categorisation includes all knives, axes, as well as other product types like billhooks, froes, and other categories explicitly mentioned in the legislation, such as loppers and secateurs.

The updated legislation in the Offensive Weapons Act 2019 primarily aims to enhance law enforcement's response to the devastating impact of youth violence, most specifically knife crime or crimes involving blades intended or adapted for causing harm to others. It is not intended to inconvenience modern-day woodworkers or tools designed exclusively for green woodcraft. Despite this, we hope you understand that we have both a legal and ethical obligation to maintain compliance. We sincerely appreciate your cooperation.

Out of Stock Items

If any part of your order is temporarily out of stock you will be advised by email or telephone to give you an estimate of delivery; in such instances  we will be happy to ship the in stock segment of your package and follow up with the remaining items once in stock, or keep the package on hold to send in one consignment; although in order to minimise our impact on the environment, we prefer to ship in one consignment if possible.

For some of our suppliers we can get a rapid restock, which means we often can still deliver your order within 7-14 days. Please always enquire with the team if there is a particular item you require.

Pricing and VAT

All Woodsmith's products are priced in pounds sterling and include a 20% value-added tax (VAT). However, books are exempt from VAT, and when you purchase gift vouchers, no VAT is charged on that transaction. Please note that when gift vouchers are redeemed, VAT will be included in the transaction. Additionally, VAT is charged on shipping rates.

Shipping and Delivery

Goods will be delivered according to the shipping and delivery information provided on our website. Please refer to the dedicated page for full details and shipping rates.

Returns

If the goods received are faulty or incorrect, they may be returned within 14 days of receipt for a full refund, including delivery charges. However, the original item must be returned in order for us to investigate the fault or quality control issue. Delivery charges incurred by this return will be refunded in addition to the original charge, when provided with proof of postage.

If the goods have been dispatched as ordered but are unwanted due to their description on the website being incorrect or misleading, they may be returned for a refund, including delivery charges, within 14 days of receipt.

If goods are returned for any other reason, carriage charges will not be refunded and a handling charge of 10% of the product cost may be deducted from the cost of the sale. Please note that returned goods must be unused, have the original packing, and be accompanied by the original invoice or delivery note. This does not affect your statutory rights as a consumer. The original purchase amount, less any delivery and handling fee where appropriate, will be credited to the card used for the purchase of goods.

Cancellation Policy

We strive to meet The Distance Selling Regulations. Every customer has the right to cancel their order within 7 days of placing the order before goods are shipped, subject to the provisions of our returns policy above. However, if an order is placed and cancelled before it is shipped and a refund requested we reserve the right to deduct any card handling or processing fees for the original payment, which are non refundable to us.

Complaints

We take all complaints seriously and aim to address all complaints as quickly and efficiently as possible. If you have a complaint, please email us at enquiries@woodsmith.co.uk or call us at 0191 252 4064 between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

Packaging

Over the past 12 years, we've been operating the Woodsmith's website, and we're pleased to report that only a few of our packages have been damaged in transit. We attribute this success to the care taken by Royal Mail and Parcelforce, as well as our own attention to detail when packing your orders.

We're committed to using recycled packaging materials whenever possible. We receive a lot of recyclable packing materials from our own tool suppliers, and we love the idea of giving these materials a second life. We also use both new and recycled cardboard, and we're in the process of switching to adhesive paper packaging tape on our parcels, making it easier for you to recycle your packaging materials.

While we can't guarantee that our packaging is 100% frustration-free, we're confident that your order will arrive intact. We hope that you'll be able to recycle most of the packaging materials, which can be put directly into your domestic recycling bin or used to fuel your woodburning stove!

If you use a sharp knife to open your Woodsmith's package, please take precautions to protect yourself and the contents of the package.
