Smedbergs
Swedish company Smedbergs have been making axe handles for more than 50 years.
They make handles for most of Sweden's major axe makers.
A few years ago we were very happy to pay Smedbergs a visit at their factory in Sweden, we were given the full guided tour of the production workshops where the seasoned boards of American hickory are processed into handle blanks, the automated copy lathes shop and where handles are stamped with a brand name and in most cases given a kerf for the wooden wedge.
We supply all of our Smedbergs handles with both a wooden wedge and a steel wedge. However, it can't be stressed enough that it is the wooden wedge that must be fitted accurately and securely for an axe to be safe in use. Especially on the smaller size handles, fitting a secondary steel wedge can split the wood, and whilst this in itself of little concern, it does not look great.
If you have any questions about finding the right handle for your axe head please get in touch, we'd be pleased to help.
