Step into the world of traditional woodworking with the English Rustic Style Shave Horse - a quick-release holding device designed to be used while seated. Each one is handcrafted by Maurice Pyle in the Woodsmith workshop, felled, milled, riven, and turned entirely by us. No two are exactly alike.
Individually made to order from carefully selected seasoned and green wood, this quick-grip, quick-release tool has been a staple in woodland craft for centuries. While versatile, its primary role is securing rough billets for precise shaping with a drawknife or spokeshave.
A quintessential tool for pole lathe turners, the shave horse has appeared in many forms across Europe and the USA for generations. Historically embraced by basket makers, chair makers, coopers, and other artisans, our English Rustic Style Shave Horse continues that tradition, combining proven design with the integrity of an entirely hand made device.
Constructed mainly from round hardwoods such as ash and sycamore, each shave horse is shaped from green roundwood. Minor seasoning splits may appear over time - a natural part of the material - but these do not compromise strength or performance.
With two legs at the rear and one at the front, this design is equally stable on a forest floor or in a workshop. The ergonomically shaped seat adds comfort for extended use. Dimensions vary depending on materials available, but as a guide, the body is typically 4.5-5ft long and 7-8 inches wide.
