We’re excited to share an important update to the Gransfors Bruk Large Carving Axe, bringing it closer to Wille Sundqvist’s original design. The updated grind offers improved control and efficiency, especially for carvers wanting a tool suited to either right- or left-handed use.
The previous designs were more like side axes, however the new asymmetric grind now features:
- A long, hollow bevel on one side for better support
- A shorter, steeper bevel on the other for fast and efficient wood removal
PLEASE READ! Gransfors has also changed how they label their grinds. They now refer to the side the long bevel is on (which previously correlated with handedness). So, if you want the correct grind for your handedness:
- Right-handed users: choose the Left-Ground Axe
- Left-handed users: choose the Right-Ground Axe
- If you’re unsure or want a good all-rounder, the double-bevel (symmetrical) version remains a very versatile choice.
About the Axe
The Large Carving Axe was developed in collaboration with Wille Sundqvist and Onni Linnanheimo, inspired by traditional Scandinavian designs. It’s made specifically for shaping and carving green wood.
The long, curved cutting edge extends above the eye of the head, allowing smooth slicing cuts. The hand-carved handle (made from Swedish red beech) provides excellent grip, control, and balance. The pronounced beard lets you grip close behind the edge for detail work.
Grind Options
- Double-bevel (equal bevels): A balanced, general-purpose grind suitable for both right- and left-handed users. Works especially well for carving concave forms like spoons.
- Left-Ground: Designed for right-handed carvers. Short bevel on the left, long hollow bevel on the right.
- Right-Ground: Designed for left-handed carvers. Short bevel on the right, long hollow bevel on the left.
