Traditional Bark Peeler hand-forged in the North of England to Woodsmith's specifications by Alex Sowden of Hammer and Hound Forge.
Inspired by the handheld bark peeler used historically in South Lakes, notably by the renowned coppice merchant Bill Hogarth, who used this single tool for more than 3 months of every year. The production of this new tool based on this traditional design was developed with insights from skilled swiller and craftsperson Lorna Singleton, who peels oak every spring alongside Owen Jones. You can see a nice example of the inspiration of these tools in action here, by this video from Miscellaneous Adventures.
In our opinion, these socketed designs are a lot more durable and give a lot more control in removing bark cleanly, than the flared bark peelers attached by tang sitting in ferruled handle.
Specifications:
- Socketed design
- Length: approx. 160 mm (from cutting edge to socket hole)
- Cutting Edge: 30 mm wide, ground and polished to approximately 35 degrees with rounded corners
- Handle information: This tool is sold UNHANDLED, as most users prefer fitting their own tapered handle tailored to their desired length. However, we offer the option of a rustic short handle (approx. 6") or a longer handle (approx. 10") for an additional cost, made and fitted in our workshop. These will be either turned or faceted by drawknife and spokeshave (depending who is in on the day to make them!). The peeler shown is with a 6" faceted handle.
Important: This tool is not intended to be "sharp" in the traditional sense. It is specifically designed as a peeling tool - not a cutting implement - but is finely tapered to efficiently remove bark.
As always, these are hand forged tools, so please expect some mm discrepancy on sizing.
