The Woodsmith Log Dog is an essential traditional timber framer's tool, used to hold a log in position while it is hewn with an axe from a raw round log into a square timber. The log dog features a parallel end which is driven into the support beam and a perpendicular end which is embedded into the log to be hewn.

We have worked in collaboration with Hammer and Hound, a local blacksmith in the North East to create these hand-forged log dogs from high quality mild steel. We've gone through several rounds of prototypes and testing - and really excited to have these log dogs available for sale.

Please note that these log dogs are forged from one piece of mild steel, chosen for its malleability and safety over hardened steel. While mild steel may deform under heavy hammering, especially with a metal hammer, it can be easily reshaped on an anvil. This choice avoids the risk of shattering under repeated strain, which can occur with hardened steel.

Can log dogs be used for timber framing?
Yes. While commonly associated with log building, log dogs are also useful in timber framing workshops for temporarily securing beams and large timbers during layout, fitting, and joinery work.

Are forged log dogs better than welded log dogs?
Forged log dogs are generally stronger and more durable because the steel is shaped as a single piece rather than joined by welds. Many traditional craftspeople prefer forged tools for demanding woodworking and log building applications.

What is the difference between a log dog and a timber dog?
