Handmade by our in-house leatherworkers, each drawknife sheath is made from
3.5 mm full-grain vegetable-tanned leather for durability and longevity. We use solid brass fittings and carefully finished edges to create rugged, hard-wearing protection that, if cared for properly, will last as long as the tool itself.
Apply a leather balm occasionally to maintain the leather, and avoid storing it in very damp conditions. Over time the sheath will age and develop a natural patina, forming a unique visual record of the tool’s use.
We make sheaths to fit the majority of our premium tool range. If you can’t find the right sheath for your tool, please get in touch and we’d be happy to discuss a custom piece.
Please note: all Woodsmith sheaths are made to order by hand, so please allow a few extra days when selecting shipping options. If you need an urgent dispatch, get in touch and we’ll see what we can do.
A note on Woodsmith Leather:
Since the beginning of Woodsmith, we’ve spoken about the importance of protecting the edge of a good tool. Good quality edge tools deserve good quality edge protection. Until recently, we absorbed the cost of basic sheaths within the price of the tools we sell, but ultimately we felt this meant compromising on the quality of edge protection.
Over the past year, Woodsmith team members Leo and Billy have undertaken specialist training and designed, refined, iterated designs and techniques so we could bring leatherwork fully in-house and produce sheaths we’re genuinely proud of.
We now sell tool sheaths separately from the tools themselves. This ensures greater price transparency and allows those who prefer to make their own sheaths, or who simply don’t require one, to still purchase the tool.
About Woodsmith:
At Woodsmith, we pride ourselves on offering the world’s finest tools, books, and devices for woodcraft. But our identity goes beyond retail; we are, quite literally, a team of passionate craftspeople and makers.
Our in-house products come directly from Maurice, Woodsmith’s founder and a craftsman of 30 years; his daughter Izzy; and our skilled team of makers, including coppice worker and leatherworker Leo, and bowl turner, hedge layer, and arborist Billy. Each product we make reflects our commitment to quality and the tradition of green woodworking and heritage craft.
Occasionally, we collaborate with talented blacksmiths, toolmakers, and fabricators - prioritising independent local makers whenever possible - to produce specially commissioned products inspired by our own designs.
