Kay Embretsen Spoon Knife No.2
This exclusive hand-forged compound curve spoon knife from Kay Embretsen is designed for carving the bowl of spoons, featuring a larger sweep than the No.1 knife for deeper excavation and shaping of the spoon’s bowl. Now hollow-ground on the inside of the blade, it’s easier to sharpen and maintain.
We’ve purchased the final stock of these knives directly from Kay, and he will not be making them again. This is the last batch available- once they’re gone, they’re gone.
Currently, only the Masur Birch short handle version is available, the long handled variants pictured are not available.. The handle is made from beautifully figured Masur Birch - lightly oiled to bring out the unique grain - offering a secure, comfortable grip with longitudinal facets. Handle length approx. 130mm (5").
Masur Birch isn’t a separate species but a distinctive grain pattern found mainly in Downy Birch and Silver Birch. It’s sometimes known as Karelian Birch, named for the Karelia region between Finland and Russia. The swirling, burl-like figure is highly prized for its beauty and unique character.
The blade itself is hand-forged from high carbon steel, approximately 65mm long and 10mm wide*. It’s available in both right and left grind versions. Right-handed carvers will typically use the right grind knife towards themselves and the left grind away from themselves, and vice versa for left-handed carvers. Regardless of your dominant hand, having both right and left grind knives is recommended for versatility.
Edge comes protected with a simple goat leather wrap.
*Please note, I have one No.2 hook which is a bit shorter than the others, at 60mm. If you would prefer this one, please send an email to enquiries@woodsmith.co.uk - otherwise we will send the standard 65mm length hook.
