Joesph Marples Awl is a traditional tool with a square section ground blade tapered to a fine point to allow quick penetration into wood.

Ideal to start the location of the metal centers on your pole lathe billet, but also a very useful tool to ream out and enlarge holes

Quick and simple method for pre-drilling starter holes for screws

Increasingly rare, the handle is made from smooth beech wood and fitted to the blade with a brass ferrule.
