The Council Tool Boy’s Axe is a well-balanced, mid-weight forest axe suited to small-scale felling, limbing, snedding, bucking and driving timber wedges. Based on the traditional American Dayton pattern, this is a practical working axe - despite the name, it’s an ideal size for many adults who want a capable axe without the bulk of a full felling pattern.
The 2.25 lb forged steel head sits in a sweet spot: light enough for control and accuracy, yet heavy enough to do real work in the woods. It’s available with either a 24" or 28" curved American hickory handle, making it a versatile choice for forestry, firewood prep and general woodland work.
In September 2023, Council Tool refined the Boy’s Axe to more closely reflect historic Dayton pattern heads. The eye has been moved slightly forward towards the bit, extending the poll and improving front-to-back balance. This results in better accuracy, improved cutting efficiency and a safer, more predictable swing.
The forward eye placement also creates a slightly thicker upper cheek ahead of the eye, giving the axe improved performance for light to medium splitting, while still excelling at chopping and limbing.
